As Tamás Mocsai said: „EHF EURO 2022 will be in fact a celebration!”
According to the former 190-time Hungarian national team player, at the European Championships organized by Hungary, the role of the “eighth man” can be decisive, and the Hungarian team can even achieve outstanding results.
Less than three months and one of the referees of the Hungary-Netherlands match blows into the whistle: the 15th European Men's Handball Championship begins in Budapest.
The key Hungarian players in the sport are also very much looking forward to the tournament, including also Tamás Mocsai. The National Handball Academy Executive, Olympic 4th place, former 190-time national team handball player expects a competitive Hungarian national team:
„The national team has taken a very good direction in the last two years, a few of the former youngsters became adults, as Bodsi Ricsi or Bence Bánhidi, and they forged with the others, today's young people. We are able to defeat very serious teams, especially in a world competition organized by Hungary. After all, although the stakes are obviously growing, the eighth man will be behind the team. I hope the national team can play in front of as many spectators as possible can, because it might be a decisive factor regarding the success.”
However, it is a question, how this particular chance will affect the boys.
„It’s going to be a huge celebration, I’ve always longed to play at home, in front of a domestic audience in a world competition. We were not given this opportunity, but it has always been a pleasure to play in Veszprém or anywhere else in the country in front of a full stadium.
Obviously, the situation must be handled also mentally, in order not to overthink it, simply do what you love best and know best. But nowadays young people are able to deal with it, they practice and experience situations at stake in their clubs every day. It is important that they play as much as possible in their clubs to arrive at the European Championships in January at such a pace that they will be able to succeed.”
According to Tamás Mocsai, it is a bit unpredictable what we can expect from rivals.
„There are no easy matches anymore, there will be no awakening, the team must burn at 100 degrees from the start, but since the boys will be at home, there should be no problem with that. Because of the pandemic and the Olympics, for now it is still uncertain who with what kind of player selection comes and there may be missing players at the last minute, so concernin any national team, have to be prepared to replace up to 3-4 people. The Hungarian national team with an appropriate preparation process is able to achieve a nice, even outstanding result at the European Championships.”
And what does Tamás Mocsai say to the guys?
„Prepare with 100 percent, and give 110 percent of yourself on the field.”
The Hungarian national team will play its group matches in Budapest (if they advance, also the semi-finals), against the Netherlands, Portugal and Iceland, tickets and passes can be purchased
