Debrecen: see you in the Főnix Arena and in the city!
Once again, the main role is played by the Főnix Arena, one of the busiest sports facilities in Hungary. This indicator is not accidental: Debrecen has always been an excellent host when it comes to sporting events. But anyway: in addition to the Danish, Slovenian, Northern Macedonian and Montenegrin national teams, we can see a lot more during the European Championship in January.
Debrecen is a certain point when it comes to sporting events, even world events.
It never disappoints, be it gymnastics or skating, ice hockey, basketball or even handball event. In 2014, one of the group stages and one of the main round stages of the women’s European Championship also took place in the Főnix Hall – we are still looking forward to being populated in the grandstand, which has been renewed for the tournament.
The matches will start at six and a haf to nine in the evening in January, so we can spend almost the whole day sightseeing, exploring the second most populous city in Hungary.
There is no question that we have to start our journey at the iconic building of the city, the Great Reformed Church, on the main square of Debrecen. The oldest Bible, the Vizsoly, translated into Hungarian, is preserved in the largest Protestant church in Hungary.
The city is a real university, scientific and cultural center, so the Déri Museum, the Center for Contemporary Art or the Magda Szabó Memorial House can be a great programme during the day.
As well as the gastronomic discovery of the city: before or after the new-wave bistros and cafés, be sure to leave room for the Hungarian sausage in Debrecen (called „debreceni páros”).
If Debrecen, then Nagyerdő! The park and the surrounding area are a popular leisure center for the people of Debrecen, it also offers programmes in winter, it is enough to think of the always bustling skating rink. In the company of a mug of hot tea or mulled wine, the Debrecen Water Tower is also a pleasant destination, and even those who splash can do so in January, in the Aquaticum Debrecen bath.
We are looking forward to meeting the Danish, Slovenian, Northern Macedonian and Montenegrin fans, watching the participation of their national teams in the Debrecen group.
And if there are also shared experiences and recreation in the city? Well, then we will be the most satisfied.
