Viggo Kristjansson has quite a fascinating background story. The right back of the Iceland men’s national team is a multi-dimensional talent who made it to the international football stage before committing himself to handball.
Kristjansson's career in team sports has been an adventurous one. In 2010, the 28-year-old was trying to take root in men's handball, but he eventually thought he could make use of his talent in another sport as well.
He could not be disappointed by his development in football. He was selected for his country's youth national team and played a total of 66 games in the Icelandic third and second divisions, as well as 12 in the first division. Arguably his greatest achievement, however, was playing for Breidablik FC in the UEFA Europa League.
Eventually Kristijansson decided that handball was the love of his life. He got back to the sport in 2016 to start building himself up again at Randers! As a teammate of Egon Hanusz, the centre back of Hungarian national handball team, the 187 cm right back is making a name for himself in the German first division at TVB Stuttgart, and since 2020 he is also part of the Iceland national team roster.
Kristjánsson was selected to travel to the EHF EURO 2022 as well where he does not let his side down, to say the least. For example, he scored 9 goals in the crucial Main Round win against France in the Budapest Handball Arena.
