Head to Szeged: enjoy the city and the games!
The struggles of the strongest group in the EHF EURO 2022 will take place in the city of sunshine, where we can spend pleasant, programme-rich days next January. An easy walk on the banks of Tisza river, a breakfast in the city center, a cultural experience in the middle of the day, and then a top-quality game in the new arena: the perfect menu for a sports fan looking for a varied experience.
A city where everyone loves handball!
A city that, with its openness, captivates those who come there.
A city where we can live a bustling everyday life, thanks to thousands of young people and university students.
It won’t be any different in January either, although the „youth” will be preparing for their exams. But we can definitely meet them in the cozy squares and parks of the city center, such as Széchenyi Square, Aradi Martyrs’ Square, Dugonics Square, Kálvin Square, restaurants and cafes, or just on downtown promenade, Kárász Street.
But Szeged is not only a university center: it is one of the most important cities in Hungary (the third most populated settlement anyway), with a rich historical past, heritage and intensive economic and cultural life.
Where can the first trip of the fans lead to before a match?
Of course to the Szeged Cathedral, one of the symbols of the city, the fifth largest church in Hungary, the tower of which can be walked up to. The panorama is lavish, and we immediately feel like a walk on the banks of the Tisza river (a visit to the renovated Stefánia promenade is obligatory) and a downtown boulevard.
If we walk in the city center before or after the European Championship games, there are two things we can not forget: to taste the famous Szeged fish soup and to sip some kind of cultural experience. The Ferenc Móra Museum, which presents the history of the city, the former castle behind it, the Black House („Fekete Ház”) or the synagogue, which was hidden in one of the cross streets and was renovated a few years ago, can help with this.
A visit to the Anna spring is also a must, you can taste the medicinal water that bursts from a depth of 944 meters (be careful, the taste is unusual!). And if you want to bathe, you can do so in the Anna Spa, Thermal and Adventure Bath in the heritage listed building.
After recharging, we will head to Szeged’s new handball hall, the New Arena (for more than 8,000 people), where we will be able to watch the struggles of the Tokyo Olympic champion French, the European Championship silver medalist Croatian, the Serbian and the Ukrainian national teams.
Should it be said what a special taste it gives the group that the national team of neighboring Serbia is also visiting Szeged, just as the presence of the Croats is spicy (even the salami from Szeged).
Several Serbian and Croatian handball players have played the city’s iconic team, PICK Szeged, in recent years, and the French players in the Champions League have been able to meet them in the „old” hall in Szeged.
Now, however, a new experience awaits the city and those who come here: European Championship games, the best of them!
Keep counting down!
